The Clongowes Wood Community Choir
Last February, in gale force nine and lashing rain, the car lights appeared down the avenue and out trundled 17 brave and bewildered parents and staff not quite sure what they were getting themselves into. It was the first night of the ‘The Very Senior Choir’ and after many an ‘i’ was dotted and ‘t’ crossed, the Clongowes Wood Parents and Staff choir was under way. This year the indefatigable Liz O’Kane intends to resume and improve on the experiment and she tells us why…
Under the direction of Mr David Scott and Ms Anne Conaghan, when the giggling was under control we found our spots in either Sopranos or Altos and were thrilled to learn that there was an accomplished Bass in the room! Thank you Fergus for sticking with us! We started tentatively, we were told there was promise and we promised to return.
From February to May we met every Thursday evening in the Boys’ Chapel from 7.45 – 9.00 and – from small seeds – green shoots appeared and I’m very glad to say, ‘We weren’t half bad!’ However, we have lost a few of our stalwart 20, due to their sons no longer being students at Clongowes, and must now find, source, implore and encourage some new fledgling choir members to join us.
We can guarantee fun and laughter and most of all the great exhilaration of being part of a choir. We sing a variety of styles to include jazz, classical and our new piece to start off our new season is ‘The Rhythm of Life’ from ‘Sweet Charity’. Click on this link and learn the words at the same time: no excuses folks!
We would love to welcome any newcomers to what is now to be known as ‘The Clongowes Wood Community Choir’ and the door is open to anyone associated with the school, present and past, parents and staff, grand-parents and anyone who wants to sing, fancies giving it a go and wants to be involved. Everyone has a note; so do not be shy please. A big shout out to our new parents. We had quite a few of you last year and we call on you again to get involved if you can, as it is the last year for some of us and we need to pass on the mantle.
The choristers assemble every Thursday evening from 7.45 – 9.00 in the Boys’ Chapel. We are asking for a €10 kick-start in order that we do not go bankrupt in term one, and thereafter it is the €5 per week in what has fondly become known as ‘a fiver and a folder’ night. For our lovely senior citizens the €10 kick-start does not apply and we are delighted with your weekly €5 donation. We look forward to welcoming new members to the Clongowes Wood Community Choir this Thursday 21st.
