A key strength of being a seven day boarding school is the ability to offer a broad and rich co-curricular programme.
Sport
As may be expected, sport plays a large part in the physical and mental well-being of the boys in Clongowes. Our on campus facilities include 150 acres of grounds dedicated to outdoor sports including rugby, soccer, cricket, golf, athletics basketball and tennis. In our new, state of the art 25 metre swimming pool, which opened in 2017, we offer programmes for elite as well as recreational swimmers. The adjoining Sports Hall provides a year-round venue for soccer, basketball, fencing and cricket practice. The Sports Hall also contains a weights and cardio gym for older students, while the adjacent Vinnie Murray Pitch – our large, floodlit artificial pitch is enjoyed by the boys throughout the year.
Music
Music is resonant throughout the College from our 80 strong Orchestra, to our traditional Irish music group and three choirs. Students can study music formally for Junior and Leaving Certificates, take external exams or just get involved for fun.
Debating
Debating has long been a feature of life at Clongowes ever since our association with the great orator Daniel O’Connell in the early 19th century. Debating and public speaking are fostered from First Year and are instrumental in developing confidence and eloquence amongst the boys.
Drama
Drama has a long tradition in Clongowes, with several of our recent alumni regularly seen on stage and screen. Along with music and debating, participation in drama and the enabling of creative expression are important parts of a Clongowes education with opportunities for students to take part in various productions throughout the year.
